Once upon a time an underage Brian Gonzalez managed to get in an Atlanta night club. He befriended the DJ who showed him some basics and let him play on the slower nights. Brian started to make money as a DJ at teen dances. He played Top 40 and Hip Hop of the day. Starting with his first show, he always would rap during his performances. Since there are few words that rhyme with Gonzalez, he replaced his last name with the initial “G”. Soon Brian “G” obtained a full time residency in a club. As Brian “G” continued to work as a club jock, his pallet of musical colors expanded to include tracks that were not on the radio. Along with the mainstream, he mixed in some underground music including both Domestic releases and European imports.
Brian “G” began to become interested in making his own versions of tracks. In the beginning he would use 2 vinyl turntables and mix live into a tape recorder. Some of these mixes began to receive local radio airplay. Brian “G” began a weekly radio show where he would mix vinyl live from a club. This evolved into Brian “G” becoming a full time air personality, then Music Director and eventually Program Director. The station changed formats, cleaned house and the decision to go back to school was made. Brian found his way to the University of Georgia’s College of Pharmacy.
Along with playing all types of music in clubs, Brian began to start playing all night music events where only Electronic Dance Music was played. The promoters of these events often wanted the deejays to play only one style of music to give continuity to the party’s theme. Brian began playing sets that were exclusively Breakbeat, Hard House or Trance. The moniker DJRX was used so attendees of the parties would not expect the mainstream music played by Brian “G”. Eventually DJRX was able to play shows where he could play several genres of Electronica in the same set. Brian, as DJRX, played Electronic Dance Music exclusively for a number of years.
In the late 2000’s the decision was made to incorporate video content in the show. At first the visuals were abstract. Soon the latest technology of the day soon allowed videos to be manipulated like vinyl. Almost all of DJRX’s show, at that time, consisted of his own audio remixes. The only way to include video, while maintaining musical integrity, was to learn to produce video. It took over a year to achieve sound & picture quality that met the self imposed benchmarks.
Brian Gonzalez (DJRX) now uses his abilities as a DJ, remixer & video editor to produce a unique multimedia experience that combines music from many genres and visual media from many sources. The video content includes footage from artist music videos, motion pictures, television, Youtube, video games as well as DJRX’s own cameras.
Well produced video is magical and powerful. It has the ability to excite, inspire and provide the listener with a greatly enhanced experience. However, the audio portion will always be the starting point and paramount component of a DJRX music video.
Through out his career as a DJ, Brian Gonzalez has continued to give listeners a diverse musical experience that erodes listener boundaries. Whatever is played at the next show, expect a plethora of original content as DJRX continues making tracks and editing/remixing the work of others.
